Building Off Interreliance

It’s been said that no man is an island, which is true. We cannot do things all by ourselves. We need help. And if that is the case, wouldn’t it be nice if we had a strong network of people around us that would support and encourage us in all that we do? Few would argue against that. And that is what brings us to the type of capital we have previously mentioned, that of our emotional capital.

As a quick recap, emotional capital is needed when there are things we are physically capable of doing, say working out or studying, but it’s something that requires an inner strength to get started. Emotional capital can also be the people that are around you that build you up and support you in your endeavors. These are your cheerleaders.

Increasing Emotional Capital

So think of it as a reservoir you can draw upon. So how do you go about trying to increase it. Well in terms of the people supporting you, first it’s a matter of strengthening these relationships (which perhaps requires a bit of finesse that is more personal capital) so that they actually give a damn about you. How you do that and how you build the inner strength, I’m still working on that, so I don’t have a whole lot of insight to share regarding it, but I’ll try.

In terms of drawing upon that inner strength, a key component on drawing on less is to build a habit of doing it, whether it be exercising or getting up in the morning. Make it seem natural and you will gradually face less resistance. In terms of your support network, reciprocate. Think of the Mastermind group that Napoleon Hill coined, support one another and these bonds will strengthen and thus your emotional capital will grow. Not only that, as it is a matter of the people around you, the third type of capital, social capital, will also grow. Which we will discuss in the next section.
